Military Art

Given that I served as a Marine, naturally I had an interest in portraying military art.

These are all the military subjects that are in the book.
However, the comments I provide here are not.
In the book I want the pictures to speak for themselves.
I offer these comments here for a background of what was in my mind
as I was working on the drawings and paintings.

And for those without a military background, these comments give information not
readily known to everyone.

Not well known, two of the models for Frederick Hart's
Sculpture "Three Soldiers" at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in D.C., were
active duty Marines.  The center figure was modeled after
Cpl. James Connell, USMC.  The left figure was modeled after
Cpl. Terence Greene, USMC.

In the Marine Corps the Drill Instructor will
make sure that his recruits have every detail
just right.  In this picture the DI is the
one who is on inspection
by his little daughter right there at Marine Corps
Recruit Depot in San Diego, CA.

Little Men
Watercolor
11 ½  x 14 ¼"
1991

Collection National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum, Chicago.

Marines who served in the DaNang area will recognize this as
Hill 327, a short distance from 1st Marine Div. Headquarters.

"Little Men" was a term we soldiers and Marines used to
describe the enemythe Viet Cong or the NVA.

Needless to say, these "little men" were not alive a moment after
we popped the flare that lit up the world, and gave us light to see
themand end theirs.

This is a fantasy painting.  My working title was
"No Dear John".  It is meant to show that not
all Marines got a "dear john" letter.  The Marine
represents myself, thinking of my girl back home.
And she waiting for me to return.  I received a
"Dear Bob" from her every dayat least a note
to say "I love you".
